Staples HotSpot

A new Staples store  recently opened in front of our office building. Thanks to them I can easily get free WiFi. I don’t have to make too much effort and position my self accordingly in order to receive WiFi connection — the force is strong. Social networking sites are prohibited, but I don’t really care as long as I can surf the web fast and free. Messaging system is also prohibited, but I hardly do that. All I need is an access to Google and this site. Anyway, it’s a nice hot summer day. Thanks Staples!

Router Maintenance

I’ve decided that next week I shall change the router in the office. It’s been due for two years, I just don’t have the courage to do it. Originally, the setup in the office has an Adtran router. I couldn’t maintain the router because of my limited knowledge, so I went the easy way out — Smoothwall. I turned off routing from the Adtran router and injected a Smoothie between it and the LAN (meaning it’s currently a bridge). If I was to bond another line in our current network, I’ll need to eliminate the Smoothie. The move also will enhance my MPLS connectivity and VPN capabilities. I can also move some services in their own public host (I have four public IPs to use). I will need to come in pretty early to do this.

After all these connectivity issues are dealt with, I really hope I can solve our heating problems in the computer room. Throw in power issues also. We’re on a tight budget, so I don’t want to spend a lot on battery. I need a new one because our batteries are pretty old and very annoying because they keep beeping every hour.

It’s very difficult to find Adtran tutorials so I will be posting them here for my own reference as well as for others.

Switch Off

The other night, my 16-port switch at home gave in. No wonder my transfers were mediocre the last couple of weeks. Anyway, I resorted to using two 4-port routers so that gave me seven (7) slots only. The house is 50% off the network for two days already. I had to sacrifice the network printer, so nobody can print unless I’m home and temporarily unplug a slot. I can’t buy a new switch because I don’t want to invest a few dollars for a new one (I can’t afford apparently). I’ll be scavenging for old routers to uplink. That switch only had a year of lifespan? Heh! That’s what I get for buying a cheap one. It also reminds me that I should get new switches for work. Some slots are already dead and they’re more than 5 years old. I should get when I have my new T1 installed.

Misc Updates

I’m not exactly in the mood to write something non-innocuous (I’m just negating thoughtlessly here). So I finally am connected to a WiFi network and I have nothing to say except…

For the past few days, this machine has been acting up on me. Today I finally figured out why (moral of the story is to always check the error log when getting errors). After finally checking the error log, the problem is that I have no more space left. I had to empty the Recycle Bin and delete a few files that I no longer need. I only have 4GB in this machine and about 2.5 is being used by the system. Right now, 62% is used by the system, 16% used by me and 22% unused. Not much really if you think about it because the 22% is about 800MBs. It’s easily filled because I’m too lazy to use the SSD space. I have to spend time to work things out so that I have the web server and database files stationed on that SSD. I need to slim down this baby without compromising my GUIs.

Ate Loreta finally installed WP 2.5 in her site. She’s using Brinkster for hosting which is predominantly using Windows and it’s just a hassle working with Windows as the web server if you’re not configuring it. I have worked with Windows for web serving as a test site and it’s too perky. I will go with a *NIX flavored platform to serve web pages anytime. At work I’m still using Windows for web serving because they need the Frontpage capability. Such a useless technology if you ask me.

I will be adding another 1.5 line at work, I don’t know how I’d do it. i may have to expand the voice channels to full T1 and the added T1 goes to data. I’ll have to check with another tech for the complexity. I’d also be implementing BGP so that I don’t have to forward the goddamn ports to something else. By the end of the week, I’ll probably work a nigh shift to format a TS. I’m still allocating a schedule for it; been thinking about it since last night.

I’ve been programming at work whenever I have a spare time. I need to automate everything there. I can’t rely on our programmer overseas for every little thing. It sucks troubleshooting something you didn’t make because you’re working blindly. Time, time, time — I need time, but I can’t get any. I should really teach someone everything I’m doing!!!

Mixed Recording

I have a fixation for absolutes. Comfort is secondary for me. I want things to be at their maximum performance. I’m writing this in good ‘ol word processing program because I couldn’t connect to any available WiFi networks. This is why I hate WiFis. Some days you can connect and some days you can’t. The signal strength is there, it’s just not giving me a lease. If I was wired, I would easily figure out why I’m unable to connect. Since I’m trying to connect by air, there are just too many factors to consider and troubleshooting is made difficult. I know wireless connection is comfortable, but it’s one heck of a job for a technician like me to troubleshoot when problems arise – I’m not even considering configurations here, just the post-installation woes.

Anyway, I suspect my wireless card though. I need to check out Eee PC WiFi troubles when I get time.

The small PC I ordered from SW arrived yesterday the other day and I was stunned at how beautiful that machine is. Amazing for its price. Also, I’m in a bit of a bind installing Win2K3 in a SATA hard drive. I will definitely document the process here once it’s successful.

So many things to do this month. I have a bunch of meetings to attend this month, system upgrades, off-site installation and training, programs to design and write, and I will have to start-up again the migration process. My hands are full and I have allergies which makes it really difficult to do things. My May calendar is already filled, but why am I still hurting? I need more loads of work. I’ll be working the whole weekend and that makes it twelve straight days. I’m a goddamn workaholic – not really; I just need to forget about things and avoid things.

WD MyBook WE NFS Enabled

Eee PC comes with XandrOS distro of Linux, therefore the way I access my network files is different than when I’m using Windows. Fortunately, there is a system called the Network File System (NFS). First generation of WD Netcenter are NFS enabled, but my recent acquisition — the MyBook World Edition — is not NFS enabled. Therefore I have to do the dirty work before I can access my audio/video files from my half-terabyte hard drive. The following are the steps I went through before successfully accomplishing the task:

  1. SSH Access in MyBook WE
  2. MyBook WE as NFS Server
  3. Mount the path:
 mount mybook_ip:/shares/internal /mnt -o rw

That’s all folks!
