Shortcomings of All-in-one Gadgetry

Many portable gadgets in the past few years have been coming out that are multi-purpose. Everyone seems to want everything in their cellphones now. While I was with my girlfriend, she remarked that she won’t buy a digital camera because her cellphone already has enough mega pixels to capture the moments. I have no comment on that remark, but it did inspire this entry.

I admit I have a Treo, but that was because of a necessity when my sister offered it to me. I was addicted then and still is to internet radio and with that device only can I listen while away from my high-speed internet. I regret the two-year contract because now I just want a simple phone. As a matter of fact, I have an LG KG320 for my roaming Smart Buddy and I’m loving it. The only thing I don’t like about it is that it doesn’t have memory expansion. I’d love to save more messages, y’know.

I have nothing against iPhones or Nokia N-Series. Personally and professionally speaking, by throwing everything in one hood, compromises were definitely made and they aren’t pretty I’m sure. I have a fixation for quality and the compromises in these devices are definitely not quality, but quantity of functionalities. I won’t rely on a cellphone to capture a moment in my life. It can capture, but not at a better quality that let’s say a Nikon digital camera can. All my digital pictures are kept in their original format and I only edit copies. If you have been around this web site, you’d realize that I have a habit of backing up everything. Later on, I want to get back on these photographs and scan every pixel of it. Especially if I’m taking a photograph of my love one. I will visit every corner of that snapshot and discover many things about her. It’s an obsession,I know.

I hate listening to music from my Treo. For one, you can’t find a decent headset. Second, the phone function would sometimes not work and it’s obvious why – because everything is in a series circuit; you just wouldn’t know what’s going to happen. I’m pretty sure these shortcomings applies also to other multi-purpose cellphones. Also I hate it every time my phone rings, my music stops and it’s worst if I’m in the mood with the music.

I know that these devices serve a single purpose, and that’s to carry only one while having everything. I guess it all depends on the person. I’d rather carry a cellphone, an mp3 player, a camera, and a laptop. At least if one malfunctions, I still can use the others. If I run out of battery for my cellphone, I can still listen to my music and take pictures. If my laptop crashes, I still have my pictures from my camera, my music in my mp3 player, and my contacts in my cellphone memory. Call my primitive, but think about it.

Gnarls Barkley

A recent discovery – Gnarls Barkley. I’ve heard of him before, but I thought he’d be another Hip-hop / R&B singer because of his color. Listened to him today while on the plane to Abu Dhabi and he really sounded like Moby or Morcheeba. One famous song that I’ve heard before is Crazy. I wouldn’t have guessed a black man sang that song. Naturally, I would buy his album from the nearest music store, but circumstances have changed. I have now vowed to halt my CD collection, therefore, I apologize in advance to Gnarls because I’ll “torrent” this one when I get back to New York next week.

While we’re on the subject of music, I heard t.A.T.u’s latest album also (I don’t know when this was first released because I’ve lost touch with music news for years). Anyway, their sound didn’t change at all. Another addition on my “torrent” list.

NOTE: I am saying to torrent this and that because I like it, so don’t complain.

Soundtrip

Lately I haven’t listened to a foreign music. I have been busy listening to my OPM collection.

I just came back last night from vacation. When we arrived, my Amazon packages were soaking wet outside the house on the doorstep. They were the CDs I ordered. Luckily, people in our neighborhood weren’t foolish enough to steal them.

I now have Travis’ & Manic Street Preachers’ latest albums. I’m still waiting for my Andrea Corr CD though. As of this moment, I’m listening to Travis & Manic… These albums are excellent. I was disappointed with Travis’ album prior to this new one, The Boy With No Name. In TBWNN, I especially like the track “Closer”. In Manic’s Send Away The Tigers, the tracks are excellent and I think I will enjoy everyone of them once I get my headphones plugged in and walking, day-dreaming.

I’m also ripping the rest of my newest CDs that I put aside for a month or so now. Soon, I will be reviewing and listing my CDs. Watch out for that.

BTW, I joined TWITTER so you’ll know what I’m doing when I’m not slacking.

MTV Generation

Does MTV deserves a spot in my blog? Well, I guess it does. Every year, the time I spend watching the VMAs shortens. I confess, I haven’t seen all the VMAs, but this year’s show must have been the worst of all. It is hosted by Chris Rock, to start with. No one can host a terrible party, but the corniest comedian in the planet. Secondly, is the VMA becoming a flea market or what? Even Iggy Pop is now selling his upcoming album. VMA is place where losers from The Grammys win, meaning, good music is no longer acknowledged. I thinked I’ve watched more presentations tonight than actually hearing music in the show because everytime they announce the winner I’m already in another channel watching Steven Seagal kicks ass. The only musicians in the show are the members of Coldplay who really represented the few (the talented).

Did VMA ruin my day? Hell no! My cousin emailed me tonight asking my thoughts on a musician that I’ve never heard of before called Viena Teng. After listening to a few samples off her album, I was immediately hooked. I’m off to Borders tomorrow to buy the album. She has a beautiful voices and her music is really moving. It’s orchestral, yet it rocks!
