Eee Box

I had to wait a week before writing about the latest addition in my network — the ASUS Eee Box. If I may, I would say that the Eee Box is ASUS’ answer to Apple’s Mini PC; only smaller. The unit weighs 3lbs and is 1-inch thick (8.8×7x1) only. It comes with two mounts — one is for desktop mount and the other is a wall mount or like what ASUS advertises, the unit is mounted behind an LCD monitor to get the effect of “no box PC”. The box comes with wired keyboard and mouse. Of course if you chose the wireless route, you can do so because the machine already comes with wireless adapter (and antenna for range maximization). Knowing me, this featureis of course disabled. The machine is also very quiet and does not take up so much power consumption. The Box is also DVI ready so if your monitor has DVI, that would be great. For an average user, it won’t be a difficult computing because the Box is pre-installed with Windows XP Home Edition.

The Box!!!

The Box!!!

Why did I have to purchase this gadget? For one, I wanted to test it and it’s cheap enough to experiment with. I plan to install other *NIX flavored OS in it instead of Windows. I also needed a PC that can serve MySQL database and it shouldn’t take space in my workspace and won’t consume so much power. Eee Box is the perfect specimen. The Box has been running since I bought it an a few restarts were executed because of Windows’ unfailing releases of bug fixes (don’t they get tired of this why not release a less buggy software instead).

I only recommend the  Box to an average user. Average I mean a user who only does: web browsing, chat, email, music, photos, occasional videos, word processing. I don’t prefer this to a hardcore user who may wish to do audio-visual editing and multi-tasking applications although it’s hyper-threading. However, it’s enough for daily computing.

Nikon D40

Nikon D40

Today, I received my new digital camera from Nikon — the DSLR model D40. I had to pay a wee more than a usual compact digital cameras, but so far after taking a few snaps of Lexie’s 1st birthday (official celebration) I’m impressed. To the curious ones, I spent $385 for it from NewEgg. I’m not no more than an amateur when it comes to photography. Owning this gadget may indulge me into the craft a tad… just a tad. So here’s my early observation of the camera and my thoughts toward the possibilities.

Unlike your ultrahandy compact digital cameras, the user uses an optical viewfinder to take photos with DSLRs. I find it better this way because you become more intimate with the subject and the camera is steadier. Also with the D40 (and most DSLR), I can take snap after snap easily because of the speedy shutter speed. So moments are better preserved.

I will be practicing these coming days to familiarize with the new gadget so that I can publish share-worthy photos here.

Smart Plug ‘N Talk

I can finally come out of the shell and talk about Smart’s latest technology release — Plug ‘n Talk. I met with Smart representatives earlier today and I was able to witness a demonstration of this very cool gadget. It is a hybrid VoIP unit. In a nutshell, the unit which is essentially a thumbdrive accepts a Smart Buddy Simcard, plugged into a Windows computer with internet connection and can take outgoing and incoming voice calls and SMS/MMS messages incurring Philippine local rates. The hybrid nature of the technology is derived from the model whereas the party using the unit uses an over-IP technology which connects to Smart’s network in the Philippines and from there a circuit-switch communication occurs. The reciprocal applies when the unit becomes the receiver. In other words, it’s a VoIP-Circuit-switch technology.

Though I know the launch date, I will not provide that information as well as any pricing. I’m just to excited to post the technology’s overall concept. For more information, visit the hyperlinked site above.

During the demonstration, the call is quite loud and clear, however I won’t be too optimistic. There still is that VoIP characteristic. I’m only after the text messaging because it only costs P1/outgoing message to any Smart/TNT and P2 for Globe/TM/Sun and the MMS which costs the same as what they charge in the Philippines. I’ll have my dongle hooked into my PC and find TXTM8S.

Updates On Me

Okay, here we go. You may have noticed drastic changes in the site. It looks more crowded than the previous one. Don’t worry, an upgraded version of the old one will return. For now, let me enjoy the pinkish motif. I love the header so much that it compliments the site’s name.

Over the weekend, I finally had my first entry at Tech Blog Philippines. I’ve been looking for a topic for nearly a month and I finally found it yesterday. I don’t intend to write regularly there, but I will formulate a better piece next time I come across an interesting gadget.

This morning, I took my learner’s permit exam for a motorcycle license and I passed. I’m going to take the rider’s course later this month or early next month once I’m fully geared up. I have to do this before the winter starts. Then save for a bike for next summer. I’ve been eyeing a Ducati Monster for a few years now.

Tonight, before catching up with a late entry before midnight strikes, I cleaned up my Friendster list. I deleted a few accounts which are duplicate and/or have been dormant for a few weeks.

Shortcomings of All-in-one Gadgetry

Many portable gadgets in the past few years have been coming out that are multi-purpose. Everyone seems to want everything in their cellphones now. While I was with my girlfriend, she remarked that she won’t buy a digital camera because her cellphone already has enough mega pixels to capture the moments. I have no comment on that remark, but it did inspire this entry. (more…)

CloudBook Now Available

I’ve been waiting for the release of this gadget even though I’m not buying one. I check Walmart.com daily, but they never posted there. Finally, I found another retailer and that’s ZaReason, Inc. Anyone interested to get one should checkout the site before CloudBooks are sold out.

Edition: CloudBook is delayed for another month.

ASUS Eee PC

eeepc.jpgI finally decided to purchase an Eee PC instead of getting a Wii. I realized that I won’t be playing a video game in my free time that much and  really need a small notebook wherever I go. I know I’ve said countless times that  don’t want a laptop to carry around, but this baby is so lightweight and small that it feels like I’m carrying an actual binded notebook. Though it doesn’t have that much disk space, it has all the software I need for mobile computing including the WiFi.

I have the 4G so it also comes with a webcam. Pretty cool gadget and I must say this has to be one of the est I’ve ever spent my bucks for. I have yet to adjust with the keyboard, but I don’t expect to type faster here.

I still have to play around with the unit to get what I expected it to provide me. So, I will be posting Eee PC related discoveries in the future for my reference and for others also.
