Smart Plug ‘N Talk

I can finally come out of the shell and talk about Smart’s latest technology release — Plug ‘n Talk. I met with Smart representatives earlier today and I was able to witness a demonstration of this very cool gadget. It is a hybrid VoIP unit. In a nutshell, the unit which is essentially a thumbdrive accepts a Smart Buddy Simcard, plugged into a Windows computer with internet connection and can take outgoing and incoming voice calls and SMS/MMS messages incurring Philippine local rates. The hybrid nature of the technology is derived from the model whereas the party using the unit uses an over-IP technology which connects to Smart’s network in the Philippines and from there a circuit-switch communication occurs. The reciprocal applies when the unit becomes the receiver. In other words, it’s a VoIP-Circuit-switch technology.

Though I know the launch date, I will not provide that information as well as any pricing. I’m just to excited to post the technology’s overall concept. For more information, visit the hyperlinked site above.

During the demonstration, the call is quite loud and clear, however I won’t be too optimistic. There still is that VoIP characteristic. I’m only after the text messaging because it only costs P1/outgoing message to any Smart/TNT and P2 for Globe/TM/Sun and the MMS which costs the same as what they charge in the Philippines. I’ll have my dongle hooked into my PC and find TXTM8S.

if you are after the text service, why dont you just use the yahoo mobile service…its FREE you just register your mobile with globe or smart if you are in the Philippines ei in>ID>password and text to 2258 for globe and reply to a OFW sim number abroad for one peso …on a plug and call offering both of you get to be charge with one peso per text send …but smart is really smarting ala magic jack style I wonder if they can now give us OFW DID local Philippine number so we can configure it to our softphones or hardware VOIP ATA…..

  4. Plug ‘n Talk is a technology on its own. I was lucky enough to test a prototype. It’s neither like magic jack, nor YM.

Plug ‘N Talk is really remarkable. I just received two of them and I’m using it and it is wonderful. A mix of VOIP and GSM so you can call and text to any phone in the Philippines just like you are in the Philippines from anywhere in the world.

I have had a roaming sim for years…and this service augments that in so many ways. It is not perfect but sending a text on international roaming is 20p each…and to be able to send them for 1p is a real relief. Being able to call and have the recpient recognize your phone number is also very nice.

D ko kuha purpose ng smart plug n’talk. Ang requirement kasi, PC connected to internet. Well if my PC is already connected to internet, mag yahoo messenger na lang ako – free pa. Puede makipagchat at kita mo pa kausap mo. Anong point gagamit pa ako smart plug n’talk.

  7. As far as I know, SMS in YM is not totally free. Not all my contacts have internet access, thus I can’t use IM so I need to use SMS. In your case, you don’t need Plug ‘N Talk. However, the masses do. SMS has its advantages over voice calls and the only problem I have with it is typing. Now that I can type using my PC’s keyboard, it’s addictive.

Sending and receiving SMS through is a plus for having this device as well as incoming call.

But for outgoing call, I doubt it. There’s a lot of phone cards and voip companies which offer cheaper rates in calling the Philippines. Using the computer to place a call should be cheaper, look how magicjack does it.

I have localphone.com and it cost me $0.11 to call a land line and $0.1330 to call a mobile phone.

And the good thing is, I get to assign a local US number to my contacts in the Philippines. I can contact them anytime w/o using a computer.

There are similar voip providers that offer the same service.

I just purchased this hoping to use it in the USA for SMS . It worked fine in the Phils but once I am stateside I keep getting ‘encode not supported errors’ and send and receive messages are cut off. I have contacted Smart twice but I have not received a reply.

Think twice before buying this product. My experience has been that its quite buggy and not worth the hassle.

I’ve been using this new innovation from SMART the Plug N Talk Device since i bought it. I was one of the first to buy it on its launching last year. I’ve tried using it with my XP and Vista computers and i encounter no problems at all. I am so happy i am able to save a lot of money. I often call and txt my relatives back in the Philippines with local rates and not worrying being charge so high as my local canadian network do. Its really a peace of mind.

My only advice for those that encounter problems hooking up/ running the device on their machine i suggest TO UPDATE YOUR OS_OPERATING SYSTEM. I f you are using genuine XP and VISTA you are lucky but if your not YOU ARE DOOMED! lol…

    Peace…

I purchased the Plug N’ Talk and have been using it for some time now, the voice quality is great and the service is working without any problems.
As for the price, I checked and it is cheaper than Magic Jack.
as for your question, if someone from teh Philippines calls you its just like a local call rate for him since he is calling a Smart mobile number.

  23. Could you try an internet cafe? UAE has a very strict internet protocol so I just want to make sure that it’s not a porting problem. If the unit still does not work from an internet cafe, then it must be that Etisalat is blocking the port used for incoming/outgoing of packets. In the meantime, let me research on the ports that PnT uses.

Posted on 18-Feb-09 at 8:13 AM | Permalink
  24. I don’t think you can compare this to a magicjack. It’s another technology. MagicJack has its limits and it’s mostly case-case. PnT on the other hand is limitless, but with its own downsides. Only if Smart is able to fully adapt all local user privileges like the use of free text, unlimited, etc then almost everything would be on the upside :)

  25. just like any device, you might encounter problems because of the diversity of setup we are using.

I posted previously on my issues with the plug n talk and have an update. Its been over two weeks since I reported this issue to smart. Smart requested all the log files and some screen shots. I was told the software was corrupt and to delete the MyPhone and Settings folders then obtain a fresh download. Needless to say getting a ‘fresh’ download did not correct the problem. I suppose there is no level 2 tech support since i have yet to hear anything from them since this.

The audio portion works fine. When using SMS however the first 7 characters of msg’s I send are cut off and I only receive a partial of msg’s sent to me.

I have used plug n talk on two separate dell D820 laptop’s running XP Sp3.

At work using a T1 connection behind a sonicwall firewall plug n talk SMS works but there is around a 20-30% failure rate on SMS sent. At home with ATT DSL behind a netgear wireless router SMS does not work.

I have received no further support from smart. My experience has been that this product is not ready for prime time. If all you need is voice service I would go elsewhere. I can use my landline at home for less than what smart charges. The SMS capability is really the main selling point of this product and unfortunately that aspect of the service doesnt work.

Posted on 20-Feb-09 at 11:13 AM | Permalink
  28. If you are able to send/receive as roaming, then it really is the hardware. The unit does not come with a warranty because it really is considered as an accessory. I don’t think it has to do with your network at home or at work because both my home/work networks are locked down and my unit functions normally. It’s one of those purchases that are bad ones. I agree that the selling point for it is SMS/MMS (soon). Though the voice quality is up to par, the charges aren’t. Good ol’ VoIP strategy is the most cost effective if you’re only looking for voice.

” I don’t think it has to do with your network at home or at work ” Thanks for the input fonse. I have used two separate dell d820 laptops with the same results and tested this on various networks. SMS is cut off on sending and receiving text at my home ATT DSL service. Example send: (This service doesnt work) This gets received as (rice doesnt work) SMS works fine on other ISP’s I have tried.

I am glad that your experience has been better.

  32. Please post your error numbers. I have had the same problem and we are able to fix it. It is a great product and your problem could be just ISP issues, port issue and other VOIP related problem. In areas of AT&T and Qwest you have to call their support and make sure that certain ports are opened for you. Sometimes by just resetting your router/modem will do the job. (Change of DNS IP).

Pinochet, where would I find the error numbers? I get a ‘ENCODE NOT SUPPORTED’ that displays in the SMS window on occasion though not consistently. However the txt message is always truncated on ATT.

I have looked through the phone logs and see the port number but am not sure what line contains the failure. Did you open for UDP, TCP or both.

Posted on 01-Mar-09 at 1:44 AM | Permalink
  34. John, normally it is in the log in the MyPhone Directory phone.log all errors should always be represented by a numeric value. At any rate Your experience is not new. If you could get AT&T to change your IP on your Router or better still try to Reset your Router so that you could acquire a different set of IP (Public) you may be able to use your Plug N Talk with no problem. I have already and am in discussion with Smart Tech Support to correct this issue. Luckily I have ISP Status with AT&T and could change my IP on the fly and I have noticed that if I use other IP on my Subnet Group I can use the Plug N Talk as describe and it is perfect but as soon as I revert back to the IP that I personally assign to myself all else fails. So hang on there. Let us just hope that Smart Listen to an old man of Telco and get things right.

Download Xlite, a free softphone from http://www.counterpath.com/x-lite.html then send me an email at sales@libretawag.com and I will set you up a free SIP access to test. If you could make a call to a number and hear the response that Plug N Talk will work unless you have the same issue as John with IP’s and Operating System problem like Vista.

Why not just have our relatives in the Philippines call us? May PLDT Budget Card at P3 lang per minute or Globe Tipidd at P2.50 per min? No need for internet connection, and very convenient pa. Medyo mahal yung P1,800 na upfront fee. Why not text our family in the Philippines to have them call us na lang? Yung savings will go a long way:)

  39. OK lang if you have a PLDT Land line otherwise if you use budget card on Smart it is 6.50+3.00 = 9.00 pesos per minute. Best rate so far is if your Family subscribe to Gold Lite of Smart like I do then they call you for 2.00 pesos per minute if you have plug N Talk. The investment of 1,800.00 pesos you will recover after 95 text send dahil you save 19.00 pesos per text. So if you do the math in the long ran Plug N Talk will come out cheaper. You just have to know how to take advantage of what is being offered.

I had purchased 1 unit of Plug N Talk in the Philippine last Feb 7, i had used the unit for 2 days, tex and calling friends and relatives but suddenly it stopped working, it does not show the Soft Phone anymore. I tried to email text support but no answer, so i ordered another unit from okspinoy here in Glendale, Ca. I called the philippines and i can hear them but they cannot hear me, and after a day the Plug N Talk had stopped working too. I am now sticking up with my Magic Jack.

I am using a plug ‘n talk device for the last couple of months already. Actually I bought devices to my employees as well (I assume I am now one of the biggest customers for this service with more than 20 plugs :) ) All of us are doing all the calls and SMS to the Philippines via the plug and it is really cool.
As a technical freak I tend to resolve problems by myslef and I gained some experiance with this device.
You can send me directly any question that you might have and I will be happy to assist.

John – your problem sounds like something that is related to language settings.
What is the language that is defined in your windows settings? in addition what is the language that is defined in your keyboard? (you can find these definitions under Control Panel \ regional and language options \ keyboards and language tab.

    Pluto B,

Thanks for the offer of support. I am using english. I have tested the same plug n talk with two different computers (XP Sp3) on two different LAN’s, I am confident the issue is not related to my hardware. I believe it is either related to the ISP or firewall/router. I noted from the phone log files that plug n talk uses I believe port 5060 (dont have it with me) do you know if this port needs to be open for TCP,UDP or both? (can’t imagine why UDP would be used but I’m not a telco guy)

The issue is that characters get cut off in SMS for both sending and receiving. In addition around 30% of the SMS msg’s sent fail all together.

With the same exact same hardware, Dell Latitude 820, on a T1 behind a SonicWall firewall the plug n talk SMS works fine. On ATT DSL it does not.

I have not heard from Smart in over three weeks. In short there appears to be no support for this product and it does not work in all environments. I have sent them numerous screen shots and log files but they have not replied. At this point I am convinced they are aware of the problem but do not have a fix.

    Hi John,
The plug ‘n Talk is indeed using port 5060 both for TCP and UDP. In case of missing characters in SMS, can you check if you see the whole message in the phone.log file? are there any missing characters in the phone.log as well?

    Hi non,
As a first step, try to delete the folder “myphone” from the USB flash memory. If your windows doesn’t show hidden files, you will need to unhide it first in order to see the “myphone” folder. After you delete the “myphone” folder, you will need to unplug the device from your PC and plug it again. after pluging it, you will get a message that a softphone will be downloaded. follow the steps.
let me know if it solved your problem after the download.

  48. It may appear that there are a lot of defective PnT units. I have 2 units and both are in very good condition. The recent production may have a lot of defects. I bought mine in the early release and are still excellent. There should be a testing before purchasing a unit. That way these kinds of problems are prevented. The unit in my opinion works much better in older PCs. Top of the line usually does not cut it with this system especially with the recent Vista releases. Don’t forget also that ISP plays an important role here. GCC countries should really be getting a lot of trouble with this device especially since it’s an Israeli product.

The msg in the phone log is truncated as well. Example, (send) 1234567890 is sent as 90Z. The ‘Z was not there in previous tests so it would seem smart has made a change.

Pinochet, interesting that you mention that smart will have a fix in a week or two. That would seem to indicate that Smart failed to test their product on one of the largest service providers in their target market. If thats true..Smart=Fail

Look at it this way, Not only Smart had this problem with 3Wires. Other VOIP provider will tell you that 3Wire is not the best of Router/Modem for VOIP other voip provider. Anyone could have miss this one on the assumption that the USA is VOIP Friendly. At least they are adjusting to the issue and BTW it is not Smart’s equipment that is failing but rather the equipment that handles the VOIP side of it which is a 3rd party equipment who failed to test.

The good part is that only Cr2 – Loadpadala.net that has be working with and supporting those that buy from us. Smart=Very Good Product for us OFW. 3rd party vendors and 3wire=failed us VOIP lovers.

Looks like everyone is ignoring the fix. OK the forget those logs they are worthless now. All you have to do is either delete or rename the MyPhone Folder. Create a New MyPhone Folder and Start your PNT. Build21 will then be downloaded into the MyPhone and like Magic you got your fix.

It looks like I just wasted my time cause we got a few expert whose got an idea when I already indicated that we where working directly with the source. It looks like the 2 weeks I did mention is on schedule.

    Enjoy your Plug N Talk.

The new software has the same issues as the previous software. When sending SMS I get ‘ENCODE NOT SUPPORTED’ errors. I’m sure if I sat here long enough I could get an SMS to go through and it would be truncated but at this point I dont want to spend much more time on this.

in my experience, “encode not supported” errors and cut off texts are not PnT’s fault. It is caused by the router or the modem. try restarting your modem (power cycle) to get new ip address, and try to connect again. if this doesnt work, access your router/modem setting and if you can (if ISP allows) use a static IP. contact your provider to provide you the right DNS servers. this fixed my “encode not supported problems” been talking to my Pnt for 1hr and 10min no interuptions. texts work great.and fast.

How can i solve this error prompting 408 Request Timeout?

Posted on 31-Mar-09 at 6:14 AM | Permalink
  62. Dark Knight – UAE is blocking VOIP – 408 error is an internet issue. If you wish to test download XLITE from Counterpath.com it is free shoot me an email sales@loadpadala.net I will set you up for a free voip account to test.

John – I hope you could pick up the file.. This one is build21 and it includes the new config file.. Send me an email so I could upload it to you. sales@loadpadala.net it is a 7K file so you should be able to get one of those free email if you wish to hide your ID.

Rob – Same recommendation for John.

All our customer with the same issues and ++++ have now been fixed so I hope this will help you guys.

also, just to add on the fix, if you are using a separate router for wifi, turn off your routers firewall, or configure it to accept pnt. its routers firewall and not OS firewall. usually OS firewall will ask or allow PnT automatically. enjoy using your PnT.

SMART Plug N’ TALK IS A WASTE OF MONEY :

I JUST PURCHASED THIS PLUG N’ TALK FROM MY VACATION.

ITS NOT WORKING IN UAE. ( ERROR: 408 REQUEST TIMEOUT )

As what Smart had said that this device will work anywhere in the world. But, did Smart take into consideration the risk factor? I mean, will it work in places where VOIP is blocked? Dubai is a very conservative city. Etisalat, the leading communication service provider in the Emirates, is a jealous competitor. It does not allow any intruder. It blocks all forms of VOIP’s like Skype. With this regard, how will SMART Plug ‘N Talk work?

SMART ANSWERED MY PROBLEM THIS WAY:

We understand that you wish to be assisted on your Plug ‘N Talk device. We regret to inform you that Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is being blocked by the Internet Service Provider (ISP) in United Arab Emirates .

However, you may use the device in other location or area where you intend to bring it where VoIP is not blocked.

AFTER ALL “ SA ADDS NILA ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD”

  66. Rob Thanks and

Great idea and you are very correct. Another thing that I could mention for does who have 2Wire Routers from the Telcos like AT&T or SBCGLOBAL of which the Firewall on this Router could not be Turn Off you could either go DMZ for the IP that you will be using with the PNT or create user define Definitions for limited Firewall functionality.

  67. All,
Just found out too that when you have Vonage and you are using there Router you may have issued about receiving calls and texts. I just had a customer that reported the problem. So if anyone is using a Router Provided by a VOIP or Telco maybe that could be an issue. Always safe when you own the Modem and Router at least we are in control

Hi Marie – your problem can be easily fixed.
    1. Go to the following URL (http://www.yousendit.com/download/dVlveUNDZ2d1Yk9Ga1E9PQ) and download the file “OSP.CONF”.
    2. Copy the file to the folder “Myphone” in your plug (replace the existing file) – please note that the softphone application should be closed before replacing the file.
    3. double click on the file “SMART_PlugNTalk.exe” to run the application again.
The above process should solve your poblem. most probably after finishing the above process you will get a message that a new version of the softphone is available. you can confirm and download the newer version.

  81. Hi Neo,

    1. you can download the new SW version from this link:
    http://www.yousendit.com/download/MnFqaXRESEI3bUNGa1E9PQ
Just download it and extract the files to your removable disk (delete all files from your plug before extracting the new version).

    2. The fastest way to reslove your DNS problem is to contact your ISP and ask him why a DNS query to the following address: Outsmart.SMARTBRO.NET fails.
alternatively, Let me know who is your ISP and I will contact him.

Smart’s calling rates are not competitive. I can call PH phone numbers for just PHP4.91/min using Voipcheap. Compare that to Smart’s PHP8.50/min! I do pay a bit more for SMS – PHP1.95/msg to ANY CP # in the Philippines but it averages to about the same cost since Smart charges PHP2.50, anyway, for SMS sent to non-Smart CPs.

The plug-n-talk would be good though if you do business in the Phils and get a lot of incoming calls. Business people are less concered with long distance bills than non-business people. Would your friends, relatives, and former co-workers spend PHP8.50/min to chat with you? Probably not. I just use MagicJack to call family members (and vice-versa) living in my mom’s house. No additional charges apart from the annual US$19.99 (US$39.99 on my first year).

You are the best.. So far all my customers are happy and does not have this problem. Norway, I had 2 customer with 408 errors and it turn out to be the Modem/Router. DNS error, cannot blame plug and talk on this one.. Talk to your ISP and ask them why are they not recognizing the DNS. There is a fix for this one too, and OSP.CONF that was created that uses the IP address of smart instead. KDDI (Japan) for ISP I think has Smart block or something. On KDDI this is the problem (email from the customer)
We found out that your DNS is invalid. Even the smartbro.net is invalid.

    Hi Tiny,
you should go to your system administrator and ask him/her to open the following ports in the company firewall:
Port 5060 should be opened for SIP
Ports 63,536-65,535 should be opened for RTP
once he will do it, the PnT will start working at the office as well. good luck.

COme to find out Plug and Talk wasn’t all plug and play after all. After installing in accordance with the enclosed instructions I received an error code: 3 – Missing SKS configuration file. so a search of the problem led me to these pages which in turn prompted me to seek assistance from Pluto Bautista in resolving my application problem. I sent Pluto an email describing my problems which he promptly replied back to within an hour assisting me with the fix. In addition to assistance in resolving this problem he also figured out why I could call all of my friends with exception of the most important, my beautiful girl friend. If anyone is using Netgear Routers and your are getting
‘ENCODE NOT SUPPORTED’ go to your WAN SETUP and disable SP1.

And for those in the UAE, I know it is not legal but if you
download hotspot shield para ma override ang block ng service provider. I know some people who are able to do Skype and Yahoo with no problem.

is there any fix to 500-error sim card registration failed?

Posted on 06-Jun-09 at 2:42 PM | Permalink
  97. Pre

I got a pinoy sim that has less than 100 and roaming is active. Smart pinoy sim is 0 maintaining balance so an outstanding load of less than 100 should not affect roaming service. I used this pinoy sim in plug and talk and yes everything went well. Able to text and call to and receive texts/calls from Philippines. But when I close plug and talk, check the ROAM ON option and press ‘yes’, a pop-up appears saying “Sorry, prepaid roaming for handset requires at least Php100 load balance.” I tried inserting back my pinoy sim to the mobile phone, it no longer has signal at all. Seems my pinoy sim is no longer a pinoy sim now, very bad Smart service.

Anyway, just an FYI to those who are using and planning to own Smart plug and talk device.

Same scenario, I asked my friend to purchase me the device and when I tried it here in Dubai, getting the same error 408. Nadala ata ako sa advertisement nila na works ANYWHERE. My brother in Singapore who referred me to use this device and at that time nawala sa isip ko na monopolize ang telecom dito sa UAE. Nakakapanghinayang talagang bumili ng isang bagay na walang kwenta. Nag-email ako sa SMART, twice or thrice and until now wala pa akong narereceive na reply sa kanila. Then that was the time lang na nag-search sa mga blogsites and wordpress and discovered that VoIP is being blocked by Etisalat.

  112. Pinay,
Build 21b does nothing with your audio. If you are still using the PNT supplied earphone/mic, I would recommend that you get rid of it. Get a normal Headphone/Mic that plugs into your computer. Go to the Device Setting of the Plug N Talk and change the sound/mic source from Generic to that of your PC more likely Realtec and you will get a better and more stable audio source. If you PC is Blue Tooth capable then Use Blue Tooth cause this will allow you to more around specially with the New Promo family and friends calling you Unlimited.

But I notice if this PNT is plugged-in, my windows explorer would hang and enabling my virtual drive is impossible. Workaround is take out and finish what has to be done and then plugged back PNT.

If you are having problem with “encode not supported” you can try Anonymus’ suggestion. After disabling SPI I have not received such issue anymore. I am based here in Guam and have used PNT so far without any issue. Voice quality is okay. I am receiving and sending SMS text messages without any more issue. Before I can only receive SMS text messages.

Just a tip for Netgear users:

    SPI Info:
Go to Advance and locate WAN Setup.

    Additional Info:
Disable SPI Firewall – The SPI (Stateful Packet Inpection) Firewall protects your LAN against Denial of Service attacks. This should only be disabled in special circumstances.

hi, please help. my pnt was working for almost a month until it decided not to load the softphone. I can see the message loading plug and talk softphone and it will disappear but i cant see the softphone. What should I do? I read some post here about the “myphone” folder? How can I see it? I don’t see it in the usb.thanks

  134. The myphone folder is hidden. in order to see it, you need to enebale hidden files in the view settings of internet explorer. Guidelines regarding how to do it can be found in the following URL http://www.plugntalk.com/support.htm

Hi I have been using the smart PNT for a few months now. It’s great. I was reluctant to update it to 2.1 but a few days ago i did. Now I get the messages of 408 – request time out or 500- Server Internal Error. Can someone please respond to help me fix this or tell me how to downgrade it to the previous version? Help will be truly appreciated. Thank you. Btw, I use my PNT from the US and firewall is off. Thanks again.

Also, if anyone has not yet updated to the PNT to the new 2.1, I would really appreciate it if you would copy the file in the USB and post in online. Thank you

  138. Dokwa, yes the friends and family back home can avail of the Promos to call or text the PNT. More promo coming suggest you go ahead but just make sure that VOIP is allowed in the country where you are in. UAE definitely a NO.

THEO, check Pluto’s posting. He has your answer

I think the only answer for all the problem was to install a new copy of PNT in USB,
