Smart Plug ‘N Talk

3 Sep

I can finally come out of the shell and talk about Smart’s latest technology release — Plug ‘n Talk. I met with Smart representatives earlier today and I was able to witness a demonstration of this very cool gadget. It is a hybrid VoIP unit. In a nutshell, the unit which is essentially a thumbdrive accepts a Smart Buddy Simcard, plugged into a Windows computer with internet connection and can take outgoing and incoming voice calls and SMS/MMS messages incurring Philippine local rates. The hybrid nature of the technology is derived from the model whereas the party using the unit uses an over-IP technology which connects to Smart’s network in the Philippines and from there a circuit-switch communication occurs. The reciprocal applies when the unit becomes the receiver. In other words, it’s a VoIP-Circuit-switch technology.

Though I know the launch date, I will not provide that information as well as any pricing. I’m just to excited to post the technology’s overall concept. For more information, visit the hyperlinked site above.

During the demonstration, the call is quite loud and clear, however I won’t be too optimistic. There still is that VoIP characteristic. I’m only after the text messaging because it only costs P1/outgoing message to any Smart/TNT and P2 for Globe/TM/Sun and the MMS which costs the same as what they charge in the Philippines. I’ll have my dongle hooked into my PC and find TXTM8S.

Pochuk, I saw the same ad and I am now interested with PnT because of this idea, if they call us using the promo. It’s not only for me but also for my friends and housemates here abroad. I am planning to ask a friend who is in Pinas for vacation to buy for me this PnT if the unlimited promo can be used by our friends & family in Phil to call us through the PnT.

Please, can somebody help us answer this query???

  4. Pinoy June 29, 2009 at 9:29 PM #

Hi guys, base on the smart hotline, pnt is not allowed to used any promo. But the person who availed smarttalk at the philippines can call pnt unlimited.

  5. Pinochet June 30, 2009 at 5:07 PM #

Smart Unlimited Promo is for Smart Prepay and Postpay in the Philippines ONLY. They can call Any PLUG N TALK for UNLIMITED TALK TIME. PHP100.00 is good for 5 days and PHP500.00 is good for 30 Days. Those that do not buy the SMART TALK 100 or 500 can us ordinary loads but will have to REGISTER. If you buy the PHP100 ad 500 all they have to do is dial *6400 plus the PLUG N TALK 11 digit number. EX. *6400091971XXXXX

hello.. i just wanted to seek for help. i recently updated my device to build 21b. after the update they can’t hear me clearly but i can hear them very well. they said the line became choppy. any help please? thank you in advance..

  7. Pinochet July 4, 2009 at 7:21 PM #

    Pinay,
Build 21b does nothing with your audio. If you are still using the PNT supplied earphone/mic, I would recommend that you get rid of it. Get a normal Headphone/Mic that plugs into your computer. Go to the Device Setting of the Plug N Talk and change the sound/mic source from Generic to that of your PC more likely Realtec and you will get a better and more stable audio source. If you PC is Blue Tooth capable then Use Blue Tooth cause this will allow you to more around specially with the New Promo family and friends calling you Unlimited.

links are dead. can you add new links for the fix? thanks pluto!

  17. PNT_Kr July 29, 2009 at 9:53 PM #

It is working nicely here in Korea, but sometimes I also get 408 message this doesnt take long though, it might be on the provider or the smart network itself.

But I notice if this PNT is plugged-in, my windows explorer would hang and enabling my virtual drive is impossible. Workaround is take out and finish what has to be done and then plugged back PNT.

if you are having 503 dns error, edit C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts and add the following line at the end:
    203.87.189.252 outsmart.smartbro.net

*if it doesnt work or when you ping 203.87.189.252 and times out, have a friend ping outsmart.smartbro.net and use that ip instead.

hi, just had PnT from the philippines…..i keep on having the “encode not supported” message. i already reset my modem and netgear wireless router but it still didn’t work. now i haven’t tried options like disabling (SP1) in the WLAN setting…..co’z i dont know how….and the other option of changing IP to static IP something and ask the provider for the right DNS……so technical……..what is the best thing to do to solve my problem…..please please help me….thanks

  23. Pluto B August 11, 2009 at 6:49 AM #

    besneybabe,
once you plug in the device to your PC you should also see a new cd rom drive called “SMART” under “my computer”. right click on the icon of the cd rom drive, and select “Open AutoPlay…” . let me know if the problem was solved. if no, you can contact me directly at pluto.bautista@gmail.com

    Hi

I am currently in melb aust. I have been using PnT sucessfully until I received “500-error” message. Can you please kindly help me find a remedy for this? thanks and much appreciated.

  26. ron August 17, 2009 at 4:41 AM #

If you are having problem with “encode not supported” you can try Anonymus’ suggestion. After disabling SPI I have not received such issue anymore. I am based here in Guam and have used PNT so far without any issue. Voice quality is okay. I am receiving and sending SMS text messages without any more issue. Before I can only receive SMS text messages.

Just a tip for Netgear users:

    SPI Info:
Go to Advance and locate WAN Setup.

    Additional Info:
Disable SPI Firewall – The SPI (Stateful Packet Inpection) Firewall protects your LAN against Denial of Service attacks. This should only be disabled in special circumstances.

hi, please help. my pnt was working for almost a month until it decided not to load the softphone. I can see the message loading plug and talk softphone and it will disappear but i cant see the softphone. What should I do? I read some post here about the “myphone” folder? How can I see it? I don’t see it in the usb.thanks

  29. Pluto B September 13, 2009 at 6:19 AM #

The myphone folder is hidden. in order to see it, you need to enebale hidden files in the view settings of internet explorer. Guidelines regarding how to do it can be found in the following URL http://www.plugntalk.com/support.htm

Hi I have been using the smart PNT for a few months now. It’s great. I was reluctant to update it to 2.1 but a few days ago i did. Now I get the messages of 408 – request time out or 500- Server Internal Error. Can someone please respond to help me fix this or tell me how to downgrade it to the previous version? Help will be truly appreciated. Thank you. Btw, I use my PNT from the US and firewall is off. Thanks again.

  32. Justin October 1, 2009 at 9:55 PM #

Also, if anyone has not yet updated to the PNT to the new 2.1, I would really appreciate it if you would copy the file in the USB and post in online. Thank you

  33. Loadpadala October 2, 2009 at 1:49 PM #

Dokwa, yes the friends and family back home can avail of the Promos to call or text the PNT. More promo coming suggest you go ahead but just make sure that VOIP is allowed in the country where you are in. UAE definitely a NO.

THEO, check Pluto’s posting. He has your answer

Hi I’m a seaman, and all of my friends and colleague are using this wonder PNT and we have also some problem like the PNT is running but no soft phone on the desktop and error like windows close the program the only thing we did was put a new copy of PNT in USB (the copy was from PNT unit also that working ok)

  35. Scott October 6, 2009 at 3:28 AM #

I think the only answer for all the problem was to install a new copy of PNT in USB,
